Thonet no.14 chair
Designed by Michael Thonet, 1859
Steam-bent beech, cane seat

After Thonet had made a variety of chairs utilising steam bending, this design developed into the first mass-produced chair in history.  The design was very advanced and economical – 36 disassembled chairs packed into a one cubic metre box for transportation.  An icon of Viennese coffee-house culture, the chair is still in production.

We are currently developing a 1:16 paper model of this chair, planned to launch in early summer 2017. The top and following images are our mock ups.  In fact this was the most difficult chair to translate into paper since we started 1:16 – more than 30 tests were made!
